The Deathwatch, also known as the “Long Vigil” or the “Long Watch,” stands as a unique chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. Comprised solely of Veteran Space Marines, they serve a crucial role as the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Xenos within the Imperial Inquisition. When the Inquisition requires firepower beyond the Astra Militarum or its own agents can provide, the Deathwatch steps in.
Sentinels Against Xenos Horrors
The sacred duty of the Deathwatch is to be the sentinels against these terrible xenos races and more. They are the first and often the only line of defense against inhuman horrors that threaten Mankind across the galaxy. Their mission is clear: stand ready to act when these ancient evils rise once more.
A Unique Brotherhood
What sets the Deathwatch apart is their composition. They are not a standalone chapter but a collection of Veteran Space Marines drawn from various existing chapters. These elite warriors come together to serve the Inquisition for a discreet period, a great honor indeed. Their service details are kept shrouded in secrecy, even from their home chapters.
The Kill-Teams
In contrast to traditional Adeptus Astartes tactical groups, Deathwatch Space Marines form specialized units known as “kill-teams.” These close-knit squads of specialists are tailor-made to tackle specific threats head-on. When a xenos menace proves too formidable, multiple kill-teams may unite for the greater good.
A Last Resort
Should the threat still prove insurmountable, the Inquisition may turn to a full Space Marine Chapter or regiments of the Imperial Guard. The Deathwatch, however, remains humanity’s steadfast bulwark, protecting us from the shadows of the galaxy.
