Beyond the Box: What 900+ Players Told Us About the State of 40k
When we launched the Armageddon box giveaway, we asked a very simple question:
What is your favorite hero or unit in the 40k universe, and what makes them so great?
We expected a solid turnout. Instead, our studio inbox completely flooded with 911 incredibly detailed, deeply passionate answers. 1 answer out of 5 hit the maximum character limit just to defend their tabletop choices.
Because our team lives and breathes miniature painting, we refused to simply pick the winners and archive the rest. We realized we were sitting on a massive, highly accurate snapshot of the modern Warhammer community.
We crunched the numbers on every single response to map out the exact trends dominating the hobby right now. Get ready to see which armies truly rule, why Orks have their own completely unique subculture, and exactly what drives player loyalty today.

Factions Breakdown: The Most Popular Warhammer 40k Factions
The Big Three Super-Factions
Looking at the macro-level split, the loyalists of the Imperium hold a commanding lead with 398 direct mentions, making up 43.7% of the total answers. The various Xenos threats are right behind them with 290 mentions (31.8%), proving the alien factions have a massive, dedicated tabletop presence. The Traitor Legions and warp entities of Chaos secure the third spot with 141 mentions (15.5%).
The Space Marine Chapter Upset
Every veteran player knows the Ultramarines get the vast majority of the official spotlight. The community data, however, reveals a massive upset. When ranking specific Space Marine chapters, the traditional poster boys dropped to sixth place at exactly 3.0% in most popular warhammer 40k factions contest. Players show immense loyalty to chapters defined by intense flavor and distinct visual identities. The Blood Angels completely rule the pack at 8.2%, followed closely by the Space Wolves at 6.1%, Dark Angels at 4.7%, and the noble Salamanders at 4.1%.

The Black Templars also punched incredibly hard, securing 3.8% of the vote, making these in top 5 most popular warhammer 40k factions. Kristian, our second-place giveaway winner, captured their exact community appeal perfectly:
“The Black Templars are great because they’re basically a 10,000‑year nonstop space crusade powered by pure religious hype, zero chill, and the deeply held belief that if you hit heresy hard enough with a chainsword while screaming “FOR THE EMPEROR”.

The Chaos Legions
On the chaotic side of the galaxy, the generic Black Legion takes a backseat to factions driven by tragedy and heavy physical themes. The plague-ridden Death Guard led the traitor standings at 4.2%, with the aggressive World Eaters taking second place at 3.0%. The numbers show that players heavily gravitate toward armies that offer rich opportunities for grime, extreme battle damage, and highly emotional lore.

The 5 Most Popular Characters in the Galaxy
When picking individual heroes and villains, players prioritize flawed, emotional characters and legends with heavy narrative weight over pure tabletop power. Here is how the top five character spots shake out.
1. Sanguinius
Taking the top spot with 2.2% of all character mentions, the Primarch of the Blood Angels represents the ultimate tragic archetype. Players are deeply drawn to his nobility, his doomed fate, and the immense emotional shadow he casts over his sons.
2. Lion El’Jonson
Tying perfectly with Sanguinius at 2.2% is the Lord of the Dark Angels. While Sanguinius represents sacrifice, the community is completely captivated by the Lion’s knightly vibe and his return to the setting. Players love seeing an older, wiser Primarch navigating the grimdark future.

3. Ghazghkull Thraka
The Prophet of the WAAAGH! stands tall as the absolute most popular Xenos character at 1.5%. The responses for Ghazghkull were filled with pure Ork energy and joy. One of our favorite submissions captured his appeal perfectly:
“OI, LISTEN UP YA GITS! Ghazghkull Thraka ain’t just da best unit in Warhammer 40,000! E’s da biggest, da meanest, and da most kunnin warboss wot ever stomped across da galaxy. More dakka, more choppin, more fightin. Dat’s wot makes Ghazgh…”

4. Commander Dante
At 1.4%, the weary Regent of Imperium Nihilus holds a very special place in player hearts. The community respects his 1,500 years of duty, connecting deeply with his absolute refusal to stay down. Players feel a real, personal bond with his resilience, as shown in this emotional entry:
“The more I read about Dante, the more he becomes a favourite. 1,500 years leading, holding back the Black Rage. Warrior and leader, bearing his Chapter’s curse and duty. Noble, self-sacrificing, unyielding, even against his own darkness.”

5. Khârn the Betrayer
Coming in at 1.3%, the Chosen of Khorne represents the absolute pinnacle of Chaos character popularity. Players love him for his raw tabletop presence and terrifying lore. Miguel, one of our voucher winners, gave us a hilarious, surprisingly wholesome reinterpretation of the Betrayer:
“Kharn “The Teacher”, because he taught us many things, like maths are importants (counting kills btw), bully the bullyes is not that bad (Erebus himself), and finally to be empathetic toward others (putting the butcher nails to himself for Angron)”

The 5 Most Popular Units on the Tabletop
When we step away from the named heroes and look at the backbone of the armies, the data shows exactly what players love fielding on the tabletop.
1. Terminators
Taking the top spot for specific unit configurations at 1.6%, the iconic heavy armor remains an absolute favorite. It can be classic Imperial designs. Or corrupted Chaos variants. In both players are deeply attached to that bulky, imposing silhouette holding the center of the board.

2. Heavy Tanks & Transports
At 1.4%, the mechanized might of the grimdark future stands incredibly strong. Players love the heavy treads and industrial aesthetics of these war machines. Our third-place winner, Roberto, perfectly highlighted why unique armored frames stand out over standard kits:
“My favorite Warhammer 40k unit is the Macharius heavy tank because it fills really well the gap between regular and super heavy tanks, it also has a more Grimdark appearance than the Rogal Dorn, lastly because it’s not named after a space…”

3. Gretchins, Grots, and Snotlings
Tied at 1.3%, the absolute smallest models in the game command an unbelievable amount of affection. Players love the comedic contrast they provide against a galaxy of demigods. One entrant gave a perfect description of the dynamic between these tiny fighters and their handlers:
“My favourite Unit is the Gretchins and Runherd. I just think these little goblins are so funny and the Runherd reminds me of a teacher that has to coordinate his class of primary school students at a school trip.”
4. Ork Boyz & Stormboyz
The classic green tide matches the grots at 1.3%. Ork players love units that display raw physics and absolute, unadulterated fun. One player pointed out that Stormboyz represent the peak of green skin logic:
“The best unit is the Ork Stormboyz. They are the basis of the tenants of Ork logic. They have big explosions, it goes well fast and their unshakable faith in Gork & Mork the krump will be good…”
5. Imperial Knights & Chaos War Dogs
Gigantic walking centerpieces round out the top tier at 1.3%. They represent the high-prestige side of the hobby, demanding attention the moment they hit the deployment zone. Players love the look of these massive war engines, with one Chaos Knight enthusiast noting exactly why fielding them is so satisfying:
“My favorite unit is probably the Wardog Moirax, with Inversion Beamer and Lightning lock – I have no clue why GW hasn’t legendsed it yet, but it’s fun to play in Chaos Knight lists, and even more fun to watch my opponents look confused!”

WAAAGH vs FOR THE EMPEROR – and other stuff
Beyond tracking raw numbers for armies and characters, analyzing the text allowed us to look directly at the unique language, cultural shorthand, and memes running through our community. The way players write about their armies tells us everything we need to know about different hobby subcultures.
Here are the most fascinating cultural and linguistic markers uncovered across the 911 entries:
- The “Orks” vs. “Orcs” Battle: A staggering 138 players strictly used the correct 40k spelling of “Orks,” while only 8 drifted into Tolkien’s traditional fantasy “Orcs” spelling.
- Imperial Loyalty: We tracked 59 proud declarations of “For the Emperor” or similar Imperial oaths shouted directly in the text.
- Pure Greenskin Energy: Ork players completely dominated the creative energy of the dataset, leaving 26 written “WAAAGH!” battle cries and 9 distinct mentions of the word “dakka”.
- Community Inside Jokes: The classic “red goes faster” color theory was referenced 5 times, while the reality-bending Ork meme “it works because they believe it does” popped up 4 times.
- Love for the Underdogs: 20 entries specifically focused their passion on tiny, unassuming heroes like Makari, Sly Marbo, or standard grots.
- Deep Lore Scholars: 22 highly dedicated hobbyists backed up their preferences by citing specific Black Library books and novels.
- Expressive & Global Creators: 19 submissions relied heavily on emojis to convey their excitement, and a lower estimate of 23 entries were written completely outside of English, showcasing the massive global footprint of the tabletop scene today.

Aesthetics Rules the Tabletop: Getting Your Force Ready
When we look at the primary reasons why players fall in love with their models, the results are definitive. Tabletop rules and competitive power levels are completely secondary to the real driver: pure visual appeal. The look is what captures our imagination first, followed closely by the deep lore surrounding them.
We all want to field an army that looks exactly like the legendary, battle-hardened forces from the artwork and Black Library novels. But turning a mountain of grey plastic into a beautifully painted collection takes an amount of time, patience, and specialized skill.
Balancing a busy schedule with high hobby ambitions is a massive challenge, and nobody likes facing down a daunting backlog of unpainted models.
That is exactly why our studio exists.Oour team of professional artists is ready to handle the prep and painting for you.
