Getting Ready for the Helsmiths of Hashut
The Helsmiths of Hashut are arriving in the Age of Sigmar! Finally!
New army for the Age of Sigmar is one of the most exciting announcements in some time. The community was asking for chaos dwarfs for some time, and Games Workshop finally listened. New Army Set, ton of cool, detailed models and that means we will have a lot of thinking to do.
Because, how we and you, are going to paint them?
To get ideas flowing, we’ve gathered a few of our past commissions that touch on themes perfect for a Chaos Dwarf legion.
So buckle up, and let’s crack straight into it!

Finding Your Theme: Three Paths to Painting the Helsmiths of Hashut
The Industrial Might of the Kharadron Overlords
The Kharadron Overlords are duardin who took to the skies. They are masters of industry, steam-power, and intricate machinery, living by a pragmatic code of profit and progress. Their armies are a spectacle of gleaming metal, pipes, and advanced, if sometimes unreliable, technology.
Below we present probably the closest scheme idea for Helsmiths of Hashut painting: the magma Kharadrons.

This industrial, steampunk style is a fantastic starting point for a Helsmiths army. Imagine sky-ports belching black, daemonic smoke instead of clean steam. Imagine their intricate machinery powered by souls instead of aether-gold. It’s the perfect approach if you want to lean into the ‘evil engineer’ look for your Helsmiths of Hashut painting scheme.
There’s a lot of green on Helsmiths box arts, why not expand it a little bit more like on these Kharadrons?

The Corrupted Chaos
At their heart, the Sons of Hashut are a force of Chaos. Chaos in the Mortal Realms is a twisting, corrupting force, and this past project was all about capturing that feeling. We focused on dark, menacing colors, fiery runes that glow with malevolent power, and a sense of raw, untamed energy.
Bellow we present Slaves to Darkness in Slaanesh painting scheme. Swiping pinks with green energy, and voila! Grey Helsmiths of Hashut painting scheme ready!

This is a great reference for players who want their legion to look truly tyrannical. A paint scheme inspired by Chaos Undivided uses dark, menacing metallics, fiery magical effects, and brutal trim to show their allegiance. It’s a look that screams “we are the bad guys” and is perfect for a force that uses bound daemons and hellish forge-magics.
Bellow classic Blades of Khorne commission. Because Khorne worshipping dwarves could be something not-done-yet.

The Classic Feel of the Old World’s Dwarfen Mountain Holds
Before they were corrupted, they were still Dwarfs. Drawing inspiration from the classic Dwarfen Mountain Holds of The Old World is a great way to ground your army in a sense of history. These are warriors defined by tradition, their connection to stone, and their legendary craftsmanship.

The Helsmiths are a dark reflection of this heritage. You can take some classic elements, like the heavy, rune-etched armor, the ornate beards, the stone-like textures, and give them a sinister twist. Imagine the ancestral runes glowing with infernal energy, or the traditional gold trim replaced with harsh, cruel brass. This approach creates an army that feels ancient, with a deep history of slow corruption.

A Perfect Helsmiths of Hashut Painting Scheme from Day One
So there you have it – three very different paths to the same dark forge. You could take the industrial, high-tech route of the Kharadron and twist it with daemonic power. Or you could embrace the look of a classic Chaos legion. Or you could lean into the ancient, ancestral feel of the Old World Dwarfs and give it a cruel, tyrannical edge.
Whatever path you choose, the new Helsmiths of Hashut are a fantastic canvas for a truly unique army.
But that’s the biggest, most intimidating part of starting a new army, right? Picking a theme and a paint scheme that you’ll be happy with for hundreds of models to come. That fear of choosing the “wrong” look and ending up with an army you’re not passionate about is a real hurdle.
That’s why our test model process is so important. It’s our way of taking the guesswork and the fear out of the equation. You get to see your idea on a real model before committing to the whole legion.
