Painting Nightmares: The New Archon Studio Horrors (And Some Heroes)
Sometimes we paint noble knights in shining armor. Sometimes we paint perfectly disciplined squads of Space Marines. And sometimes?
Sometimes we paint… whatever this is.
We’ve been working with Archon Studio for a long time now, painting the official box art for their releases. It is always a cool moment when the grey plastic on our desks ends up on the final packaging in stores. But this latest batch for Q1 2026 was something different. It was full of distorted anatomy, eldritch weirdness, and things that look like they shouldn’t exist.
(And yes, if you feel like the models in this gallery are watching you, that’s because they are.)
Here is a look at the nightmares we cooked up for Archon’s newest wave.

The Stuff of Nightmares: Dungeons & Lasers
Formless Shambler
This one is pure instability. The Formless Shambler looks like it was caught mid-mutation. Limbs are splitting and fusing, and jagged growths are tearing through its own flesh.
From a painter’s perspective, it’s a playground. There is no “correct” anatomy here, just a chaotic mess of flesh and bone that lets you really push the contrast.

The Ancient Brain
Every RPG campaign needs a villain that makes the players say, “We’re going to need a bigger sword.” The Ancient Brain is exactly that kind of monster.
Archon designed this to be a reality-breaking anomaly, something that the world itself is trying to reject.

The Evil Eyes
We mentioned that the models are staring back, right? This set is the reason why. The Evil Eyes are all about unsettling, intelligent gaze.
Painting these was a fun challenge because you have to make them look “alive” enough to be creepy.

Parasites
If the Evil Eyes are creepy, the Parasites are just gross (in a good way). This set comes with sixteen different models, and no two look exactly the same. They are twisted, mutated, and aggressive.

Meanwhile, in Eternia…
It wasn’t all tentacles and eyes. We also got to work on some classic heroes for Masters of the Universe: Battleground Wave 11.
Roboto (Masters of the Universe Faction)
After all that organic horror, painting Roboto was a nice change of pace. He is forged of steel and driven by honor: pretty much the opposite of a Formless Shambler.
He comes with interchangeable weapons, and the sculpt captures that mix of durability and versatility perfectly. We focused on keeping the metal looking clean and sharp to reflect his nature as a defender of Eternia.

Preternian Heroes
Finally, we have the defenders of the natural world. This set brings Moss Man and Turbodactyl.

Do You Have Your own Nightmare Project?
We loved working on these horrors for Archon Studio, but you don’t need a box art deal to get this level of quality.
Maybe you have a “grail” model that is too intimidating to start. Or perhaps you have a whole army of monsters that you want to look truly terrifying on the tabletop.
We can help with that. You pick the models, and we will handle the painting (and the eye contact). Send us a message, and let’s start planning your next project.
