For this project, it came from a single, split-second frame in the Astartes 2 trailer. A client saw the glimpse of a Space Marine with two crossed scythes on his helmet, did some digging online, and discovered the tragic tale of the Scythes of the Emperor. He got so hyped by their story that he commissioned us to paint a full army.
The Scythes are a chapter defined by tragedy. Nearly wiped out to the last man by Hive Fleet Kraken, they are the epitome of grim defiance in the face of annihilation.
It's a tribute to a chapter that refuses to die and a perfect example of how a flicker of inspiration can become a full-fledged army.
