A beautifully painted Tyranids army with a major kitbash
We love getting commissions for large armies. They always come with a sense of scale and an exciting challenge. Painting multiple units into a unified force is an art in itself.
But things get even more interesting when a large army commission also includes a kitbash – especially when it’s for one of the biggest models in the entire order.
Let’s take a closer look at the individual models in this Warhammer 40k Tyranids army and see how we did!
Tyranid Behemoth Hive Variant Army - A Deadly Swarm on the Battlefield
Kitbashed Norn Emissary - Three Tyranid Monsters in One
Let’s start with the most interesting part. Is this a kitbashed Norn Emissary… or a Hive Tyrant?
It’s hard to categorize. The body comes from a Norn Emissary, and most of the bits used in this build originate from that miniature. However, from a rules perspective it can’t be treated as a Norn unit: the weapon loadout simply doesn’t match. The armament comes from a Hive Tyrant, while the wings are taken from the Winged Hive Tyrant, the airborne variant of this unit.
Naming the rest of the units will be much easier, but the Norn Hive Tyramissary is definitely one of a kind.
Tyrannocyte Drop - Delivering Tyranids army to battle
Have you ever wondered how Tyranid units make their way onto a planet? Thanks to the Tyrannocyte. This living pod carries Tyranid units and serves as a ship-to-surface transport, ejected from orbiting Hive ships.
From this one, a Norn Assimilator and two Norn Emissaries emerged. Those huge units play well together: the Assimilator is a more direct assault unit, while the Emissaries act as support.
Brutal Strength, Toxins, and Psionics
Now let’s head to smaller units (but just a bit smaller). Toxicrene, a Carnifex Brood, and a Maleceptor create a lethal trio of brute force, adaptability, and psionic power. The Toxicrene drowns its enemies in fumes, while the Carnifexes serve as armored battering ram that crush anything in their way. Meanwhile, the Maleceptor unleashes waves of psychic energy, frying enemy minds.
Heavy Firepower and Living Shields
Tyranids are primarily known for their close combat abilities, but they also have units capable of striking targets from a distance. JOne of them is the Exocrine, a mobile gun and a living, walking artillery piece. However, it lacks defensive capabilities in close combat, so a Tyrant Guard will stay close by, as hulking bioforms bred to protect the Hive Fleet’s key units.
Masters of Fear - Broodlord and Deathleaper in Action
Terror is a weapon, and no Tyranid creatures wield it more effectively than the Broodlord and the Deathleaper. The Broodlord spreads paranoia and fear while the Deathleaper strikes from the shadows, eliminating key enemy targets.
Silent Stalkers and Psychic Storms - Lictors and Zoanthropes
Some creatures from our Warhammer 40k Tyranids army strike with claws, others with pure psionic energy. This force brings both together in the form of Lictors and Zoanthropes. The Lictors are perfect infiltrators, cutting down isolated targets. Meanwhile, Zoanthropes function as walking psychic batteries, bombarding the enemy with mental assaults
